Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has voiced strong allegations against the Congress party, accusing it of conspiring to jeopardize the safety of Bengali Hindus in the Barak Valley region. Sarma claimed that Congress is deliberately raising issues to create unrest and instability in Assam.
"The Congress is conspiring to put our Bengali Hindu brothers and sisters at risk," Sarma stated emphatically. He highlighted his concerns regarding the party's motives, arguing that while the situation in Assam remains stable, Congress is attempting to "vitiate the atmosphere" for political gains.
Sarma emphasized the ongoing efforts of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to address and resolve the issues faced by the Bengali Hindu community, contrasting this with Congress's purported attempts to create danger for them. "These issues will not be limited to Nihar Ranjan Das; they will affect thousands of others. Congress is working against the interests of the Bengalis," he asserted.
Earlier in the day, Sarma alleged that Congress is not concerned about electoral victory or defeat, claiming that its only intention is to put hurdles in the state’s development. He likened the opposition party to a "male cow" that cannot produce milk, asserting that Congress will not be able to bring about development even if it garners votes.
Addressing his first rally for the state’s by-elections at Dholai, Sarma remarked, “The Congress has no issue this election. They are not bothered about victory or defeat. They only want to hamper development. They don’t want poor people to get government benefits.” He added, “The Congress should sit at home and take rest. They won’t come to power for another 50 years.”
Sarma claimed that the grand old party has historically incited violence in the state, which has since been effectively controlled by the BJP-led government. “The Congress was busy creating conflicts between Assamese and Bengali people. Such conflicts are no longer there. There is no difference between Brahmaputra Valley and Barak Valley now. The same development is happening everywhere,” he said.
