Himanta Biswa Sarma defends Bihar Day in Assam, cites Assam Day’s national recognition

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has defended the celebration of Bihar Day in Assam, asserting that Assam Day is observed across various states, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, and Gujarat.

Responding to criticism, Sarma emphasized that Assam Day, which marks the arrival of Sukapha into Assam, is commemorated with pride not just in different parts of India but even in Sri Lanka.

He stated that the event is officially observed in the presence of the Honorable Governors of the states, underscoring its significance beyond Assam’s borders.

"If Assam Day is celebrated in Bihar, then Bihar Day can also be celebrated in Assam. As long as Assam Day is observed at Bihar Raj Bhavan, there is no issue in celebrating Bihar Day in Assam," Sarma remarked.

The Chief Minister dismissed concerns over whether Assam Day is celebrated in districts like Tinsukia, insisting that its observance at a national level justifies reciprocal cultural events.

He further noted that unnecessary controversies over such matters discourage investments in Assam, which should instead be focusing on economic growth and cultural harmony.

Sarma’s statement comes amid opposition from political groups like Raijor Dal, which has criticized the BJP-led government for advocating the Bihar Day celebrations in Assam.

The issue has sparked political debates, with critics arguing that Assam’s identity should not be diluted by celebrating another state’s foundation day.

However, Sarma remained firm on his stance, reinforcing that cultural exchanges between states should be seen as a step toward unity rather than division.
