Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday launched a large-scale financial assistance drive under the Chief Minister’s Women Entrepreneurship Scheme, distributing cheques of Rs 10,000 each to 18,370 women beneficiaries from the Margherita constituency.
The event, held at the Borgolai Dihing Sports Complex, drew a crowd of over 30,000 people, reflecting the significance of the scheme. Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister described the initiative as the beginning of a “journey towards self-reliance” for thousands of women in the region.
CM Sarma announced that the assistance amount would be gradually increased, with each beneficiary receiving Rs 25,000 in 2026 and eventually ₹50,000 in subsequent phases. “Mamai (uncle) always keeps his promises,” the Chief Minister said, asserting that the scheme also serves as a counter to “false propaganda” by the Congress.
Highlighting the government’s broader plan, he further revealed that within the next two to three months, nearly 40 lakh women across Assam would receive the first installment of ₹10,000 under the scheme.
In a sharp statement to the media, the Chief Minister alleged that certain individuals, including Harsh Mander, Prashant Bhushan, Zohar Srikant, Wajed Habibullah, and Faiyaz Shaheen, were visiting different parts of Lower Assam with the aim of “spreading unrest” by meeting minority groups and leaders of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam.
The distribution program was attended by local MLA Bhaskar Sharma, ministers Bimal Bora and Prashanta Phukan, MLAs Rupesh Gowala, Bolin Chetia, and Suren Phukan, along with Deputy Commissioner Swapnil Paul, Additional Deputy Commissioner Rahul Doley, and several government officials.
Beneficiaries expressed happiness over receiving the cheques, praising the Chief Minister for fulfilling his commitment. With this distribution, nearly 19,000 women in Margherita have formally embarked on their path toward economic self-reliance.
