Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurates Dinesh Goswami flyover, promises relief from railway crossing bottleneck

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday, March 4 inaugurated the much-anticipated Dinesh Goswami Flyover at Bharalumukh, marking a major milestone in the state government’s ongoing urban infrastructure push.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said the flyover would bring long-awaited relief to residents who had faced persistent traffic snarls due to the railway crossing in the area. “Another flyover has been inaugurated in Guwahati city. Residents had long faced inconvenience due to the railway crossing. With the opening of this flyover, people will now experience relief,” Sarma stated.

The 1.2-kilometre-long flyover, constructed at an estimated cost of approximately Rs 100 crore, connects Bharalumukh and Shantipur — two crucial points in the city’s traffic network. The project was earlier expected to be opened by March 10. During an inspection last month, the Chief Minister had indicated that the work was nearing completion, signalling the government’s intent to fast-track key infrastructure projects.

With the commissioning of the elevated corridor, Railway Gate No. 9 has been permanently closed, eliminating frequent delays caused by train movements. Commuters are now provided with an alternative elevated route, which is expected to significantly ease congestion at the chronically busy Bharalumukh junction and reduce travel time across the western parts of the city.

Announcing the inauguration through a live social media address, Sarma revealed that the flyover has been named after former Union Law Minister Dinesh Goswami, describing the move as a tribute to his enduring contributions to Assam and national politics.

Goswami, a senior leader of the Asom Gana Parishad, was credited by the Chief Minister for playing a pivotal role in increasing Assam’s share of central grants from a 70:30 to a 90:10 ratio — a funding formula that continues to bolster the state’s development financing framework.

Highlighting the late leader’s legacy, Sarma said Goswami had a profound influence on shaping Assam’s political and financial trajectory. “We are very happy to name it after him,” he said.

The inauguration of the Dinesh Goswami Flyover adds to a series of infrastructure projects aimed at modernising Guwahati’s urban landscape.
