Himanta Biswa Sarma pushes for stricter hostel rules, stops former students from gathering inside campus

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today addressed the pressing issue of deteriorating conduct within university hostels with respect to the Gauhati University election incident. Referring to recent disturbances during university elections, particularly at Dibrugarh University, the Chief Minister emphasized the need for stricter oversight and the protection of parental trust.

"From now on, former students will no longer be allowed to loiter or engage in casual gatherings inside university hostels," CM Sarma declared. "Sitting in hostels and indulging in leisurely activities like sharing meals must be curbed. This behavior is undermining the disciplined environment universities are supposed to provide."

The Chief Minister highlighted that parents entrust their children to these institutions with the belief that they will not only receive a quality education but also develop into responsible individuals. "Guardians admit their wards to university hostels with full confidence in us. They trust that their children will emerge as better individuals, prepared for a bright future. They do not expect any harmful activities to occur within the campus premises."

Sarma expressed concern over how discipline has waned within universities, specifically citing instances at Dibrugarh University where rules were blatantly disregarded. "One of the biggest problems we're witnessing now is the entry of former students into university hostels at night. This is entirely unacceptable."

In his message to university leaders, Sarma urged all Vice Chancellors to reinforce the sanctity of the campus and uphold the trust that parents have in them. "I request all Vice Chancellors to maintain the trust placed in us. It is essential to ensure safety, discipline, and a conducive environment for learning within university hostels. Even if students don't understand the importance of these measures today, they will in the future."
