Himanta Biswa Sarma reminds Akhil Gogoi: ‘You dragged my 2-year-old daughter into politics’

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stirred up a storm in the Assembly while responding to a Motion of Thanks on the Governor’s speech, recalling a 2009 controversy involving his then two-year-old daughter.

During a heated exchange with Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi, Sarma accused Gogoi of dragging his infant daughter into a political controversy over the alleged purchase of a car in her name.

"In 2009, you tried to drag my two-year-old daughter for purchasing a car in her name. Till date, I am hurt by what you did to my child," Sarma said, expressing his lingering resentment over the issue.

The Chief Minister revealed the emotional toll the incident took on him. "I spent several nights looking at my daughter after the incident. She was just two or three years old at the time," he said, adding that despite this, he continues to engage in dialogue with Akhil Gogoi.

Sarma also hinted at disapproval from his own family for interacting with Gogoi. "My family scolds me if I speak to you… When I talk to you, I have to answer to my family at night," he remarked, highlighting the personal cost of his political dealings.

Referring to the car at the centre of the 2009 controversy, Sarma pointed out how times have changed.

"The car you questioned my daughter about is now being driven by all classes of people," he said, implying that the issue was blown out of proportion and had little merit.

The exchange once again underscored the deep-seated political rivalry between the two leaders, with personal accusations and past grievances spilling onto the Assembly floor.

While Sarma’s remarks drew reactions from across the political spectrum, the episode highlighted how past controversies continue to shape Assam’s political discourse.
