Himanta Biswa Sarma slams Congress for targeting Karbi Anglong CEM Tuliram Ronghang’s international visit

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has strongly rebutted Congress party allegations regarding the participation of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) Chief Executive Member (CEM) Tuliram Ronghang in his recent South Korea and Japan tour.

Sarma expressed his disapproval on social media, questioning Congress’ criticism, and highlighting Ronghang’s crucial role in Assam's renewable energy goals.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), CM Sarma wrote, "It is unfortunate that Congress is criticizing Shri @TuliramRonghang accompanying me to South Korea and Japan. He is the elected head of KAAC, where most of our renewable energy goals can be realized. Is he being criticized for just being a tribal?"

On a Facebook live session, Sarma further explained the reasoning behind Ronghang’s inclusion in the delegation. "Tuliram Ronghang is the chief executive member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council. If we want to produce solar energy in Assam, the region with the most land available, it is only logical for him to be a part of such a crucial delegation," Sarma said. He emphasized that the region, rich in natural resources such as the Kopili and Karbi Langpi hydropower plants, is integral to the state's energy goals.

CM Sarma also urged Congress members to respect the tribal communities of Assam and refrain from making such disparaging remarks. "If a tribal leader represents me, it should not be a cause for concern but for celebration. Unity and respect for our tribal communities are key for Assam's progress," he added.

Meanwhile, the Congress party has raised questions about Sarma's associations with individuals alleged to be involved in illegal mining and corruption. Congress leader Mira Borthakur accused the chief minister of surrounding himself with controversial figures and using them for personal and political gains.

Borthakur criticized Sarma's choice of delegates for the international trip, particularly Ronghang, accusing him of ties to coal mining syndicates and other illegal activities. "The chief minister’s companions, especially Tuliram Ronghang, are deeply involved in illegal coal mining. It is shocking that he is accompanying Sarma despite these serious allegations," Borthakur stated. She further alleged that illegal coal mining in Dima Hasao continues unchecked under the current government.
