Himanta Biswa Sarma visits historic Sootea police station, announces Rs 5 crore for development of site

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma arrived at the historic Sootea police station today, September 3, the site which holds a unique place in the nation's history.

The Sootea Police Station is etched in history as the first government office in India to hoist the Indian flag, an event that took place on August 20, 1942, amidst the fervor of the Quit India Movement. This bold act of defiance against British rule marked a pivotal moment in the freedom struggle, although it remained largely unrecognized due to the absence of violence or bloodshed.

Acknowledging the station's historical significance, the state government has pledged an initial allocation of Rs 5 crore for the development of the area. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Sarma during a session of the Assam Legislative Assembly, where he also declared that August 20 will henceforth be observed as 'Sootea Diwas,' a day dedicated to commemorating the courage and patriotism displayed at the Sootea Police Station.

During his visit, Chief Minister Sarma participated in a meeting organized to express gratitude for the government's recognition of this historic event. He was joined by Sootea MLA Padma Hazarika and Sonitpur Lok Sabha MP Ranjit Dutta, among other dignitaries.

In a press conference held on the same occasion, the Chief Minister also urged the public to exercise caution and avoid investing in online trading apps, which have become increasingly popular but often carry significant risks.

The local community, long proud of its unique role in the freedom movement, has expressed deep gratitude for the government's official acknowledgment of Sootea's contribution. The annual celebration of Sootea Day will now take on even greater significance as the state formally recognizes the bravery and resolve that marked this small town's place in India’s fight for independence.
