Himanta launches Assam Premier League; Eight teams to compete for title
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday, June 21, announced the launch of the Assam Premier League (APL), a new state-level cricket tournament aimed at providing a platform for emerging cricketers and strengthening the state's sporting ecosystem.
Sharing the development on social media platform X, Sarma described the league as a significant opportunity for aspiring cricketers across Assam.
"Good news for budding cricketers of Assam! Launched the Assam Premier League, our own cricket league where eight teams will vie for glory," the Chief Minister said.
He lauded the efforts of the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) in establishing the tournament, stating that the league would help identify and promote talent from the grassroots level.
According to Sarma, the competition is designed to provide young players with greater exposure and a pathway to higher levels of the game, including domestic and national cricket.
"It's an excellent effort by the Assam Cricket Association to give a platform to grassroots-level players so they can make it to the domestic and national teams," he said.
The Assam Premier League will feature eight teams, with players from across the state competing for top honours. The initiative is expected to strengthen Assam's cricketing structure by creating more opportunities for talented youngsters to showcase their abilities in a competitive environment.
The launch of the league comes as Assam continues to invest in sports infrastructure and talent development programmes aimed at producing athletes capable of competing at the national level.
