Historic Assam's Dhubri Gurdwara hosts three-day Gurmat Samagam in honour of Mata Khivi Ji
The historic Gurdwara Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji in Dhubri on Friday, May 1 began a three-day Gurmat Samagam dedicated to the life and legacy of Mata Khivi Ji, drawing hundreds of Sikh devotees from across the Northeast, other parts of India, and abroad.
The spiritual congregation is being organised to honour Mata Khivi Ji, revered in Sikh history for institutionalising the tradition of Langar, the community kitchen that serves food to all visitors irrespective of caste, creed, or background.
As part of the celebrations, the Guru Ka Langar is being run 24 hours a day, serving thousands of pilgrims and visitors. Organisers said the tradition reflects Mata Khivi Ji’s vision of equality, humility, and selfless service.
Speaking at the event, Sikh historian Harpreet Singh Happy said Mata Khivi Ji personally supervised the preparation and distribution of food, laying the foundation of a centuries-old tradition that continues across Sikh shrines worldwide.
The Samagam also highlighted the role of women in Sikhism, with speakers noting that Mata Khivi Ji’s contribution extended beyond food service to creating a system where all people sit together as equals.
Special references were made to her famous “Kheer,” described in Sikh historical texts as being prepared with such devotion that it felt like Amrit to devotees.
Retired IAS officer Gurdeep Singh Panesar informed that the first day featured Akhand Path continuous recitation of Sikh holy scriptures along with devotional Kirtan performances by renowned Ragas.
Devotees are also participating in “Mili Juli Seva” or collaborative community service, with active participation of women in both spiritual and administrative responsibilities at the Gurdwara.
The organisers said the event is aimed at reinforcing the Sikh principle that service to humanity is the highest form of devotion. The three-day programme will conclude with special prayers for world peace and communal harmony.
