Historic Kherai puja celebrated at Gossaigaon's Sankosh River , Assam CM lays foundation stone of Rs 50 crore Bathou Temple
The historic Bathou Kherai Puja is being celebrated with great enthusiasm at Choudhury Ghat on the banks of the Sankosh River in Assam's Gossaigaon, along the India–Bhutan and West Bengal border.
The four-day grand celebration, which began on February 11, entered its third day on February 12, amid a vibrant and festive atmosphere, drawing devotees and community leaders from across the region and neighbouring areas.
The highlight of the day was the ceremonial hoisting of 42 flags simultaneously by district committees under the banner of Dularai Gudi Bathou Afad, symbolising unity and devotion. The central flag of the Kherai Puja was hoisted first, followed by coordinated hoisting by 42 district committees from Assam and representatives from West Bengal, Bhutan, Nepal and Bangladesh.
Floral tributes were also paid at the martyrs’ memorial in solemn remembrance as part of the programme.
A public meeting was held on the occasion, attended by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma along with Cabinet Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah, BTC Chief Hagrama Mohilary, and Cabinet Minister Charan Boro. Executive Members and MCLAs of the Bodoland Territorial Council were also present.
The Chief Minister arrived at the venue by helicopter and proceeded directly to the Bathou temple at Choudhury Ghat, where he offered prayers and performed rituals. On the occasion, he laid the foundation stone for a Rs 50 crore Kherai Bathou Temple project at the Sankosh riverbank, aimed at promoting and preserving the religious and cultural heritage of the region.
