Hit-and-Run horror on NH-127B: One killed, another critical in Dhubri, driver on the run

A pall of grief descended over Moterjhar in Dhubri district after a devastating hit-and-run accident on National Highway 127B claimed one life and left another man critically injured in the early hours of Thursday, February 12.

The tragic incident occurred at dawn when a speeding dumper truck, reportedly loaded with stones, rammed into an e-rickshaw with tremendous force. Eyewitnesses stated that the heavy vehicle was moving at an alarming speed before crashing into the smaller passenger vehicle, causing catastrophic damage and leaving the victims severely injured on the roadside.

One of the occupants, identified as Anil Malakar, a resident of Amtola in Moterjhar, succumbed to his injuries shortly after the collision. His sudden death has sent shockwaves through the locality, with residents mourning the loss of a man described as humble and hardworking. The second victim, Khaybar Ali, popularly known as “Bheku,” sustained grievous injuries and remains in critical condition. He is currently undergoing emergency medical treatment, and his condition continues to be a matter of deep concern for family members and locals alike.

In a shocking turn, the driver of the dumper fled the scene immediately after the accident, escaping with the vehicle before authorities could arrive. The hit-and-run nature of the crash triggered widespread anger among residents, who have long complained about reckless driving and the increasing number of accidents on the busy highway.

Within hours of the incident, hundreds of agitated locals gathered on NH-127B, staging a road blockade in protest. Traffic movement came to a standstill for several hours as demonstrators demanded the immediate arrest of the absconding driver and called for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, particularly against overloaded and speeding heavy vehicles operating along the stretch.

Golokganj Police personnel rushed to the spot after being alerted to the situation. Officers managed to disperse the crowd and restore vehicular movement while assuring protestors that a thorough investigation had been initiated. Police sources indicated that efforts are underway to trace the dumper’s route using available leads, and authorities expressed confidence that the driver would be apprehended soon.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been sent for post-mortem examination as per legal procedure. As investigations continue, the tragedy has once again spotlighted concerns over highway safety in the region, with residents urging authorities to take concrete steps to prevent such fatal incidents from recurring.
