Home Guards in Assam's Sribhumi sit on indefinite hunger strike, demand service regularization

Home Guards in Assam’s Sribhumi district have launched an indefinite hunger strike on June 25, intensifying their protest against what they describe as long-standing systemic neglect and precarious service conditions.

The agitating personnel assembled at the District Commissioner’s protest site, voicing their demands through powerful slogans and a unified call for justice.

Their primary demands include:

Amendment of the Home Guards Act, 1947,

Abolition of the six-month contractual appointment system, and

Permanent regularization of their employment.

The protesting Home Guards stated that the current system leaves them in a state of perpetual insecurity, with no guarantee of continuity or financial stability.

“We are not asking for privileges; we are demanding the dignity of stable employment and legal recognition,” said one of the protesters.

The demonstrators also issued a stern warning that a more extensive, state-wide agitation would follow if authorities fail to respond.
