Independent MLA and Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi has triggered a political storm with his recent remarks concerning Muslim voters and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Speaking at a public gathering in Sivasagar, Gogoi stated, "If any Musalman votes for BJP, then he will be known as a Kaafir."
The comment, which was made in the context of addressing communal tensions and political alignments in Assam, has sparked widespread debate.
While Gogoi is known for his fiery rhetoric and strong anti-BJP stance, political analysts and civil society observers have expressed concern that such language could heighten communal sensitivities and deepen voter polarization in the lead-up to future elections.
So far, the BJP has not issued an official response to the statement. However, sources within the party suggest that a rebuttal may be forthcoming.
Critics argue that the use of religiously charged terms in political discourse undermines democratic values and could set a dangerous precedent.
Others contend that Gogoi’s comment, though controversial, reflects growing frustration among certain sections of the electorate over what they perceive as majoritarian politics in the state.
