Illegal Burmese supari worth Rs 2 crore seized near Assam-Nagaland border

In a major crackdown, Amguri police seized two super-propelled trucks carrying smuggled supari worth over Rs 2 crore near Halwating police station on the Assam-Nagaland border in Sivasagar district.

The two trucks, bearing registration numbers PP 05AR 4930 and PP 02 EQ 8003, were intercepted after police received information about illegal supari trading operations in the region. The seizure has raised questions regarding the security measures in place at Halwating police station, especially considering the trucks passed by the station at around 4:30 a.m.

Smuggling of supari (betel nut) from Myanmar has become a significant illegal trade along the Assam-Nagaland border. The discovery has brought attention to potential lapses in monitoring, sparking concerns over how the trucks managed to pass undetected despite their size and the time of movement.

Police authorities confirmed that the value of the seized supari amounts to over Rs 2 crore. Further investigations are underway to trace the origins of the contraband and identify those involved in the smuggling network.

This incident is likely to intensify scrutiny on local law enforcement, particularly Halwating police, as the authorities attempt to clamp down on smuggling activities in the region.
