"Implement SIR nationwide to detect and deport infiltrators": Assam Deputy Speaker Numal Momin
Amid the continuing debate over illegal immigration, Assam Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker Numal Momin on Saturday, February 21, called for a nationwide implementation of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process to identify and deport alleged Bangladeshi infiltrators, asserting that the issue is no longer confined to the Northeast but has become a pan-India concern.
Addressing reporters in Guwahati, Momin alleged that the “wrong strategy” of the Indian National Congress had led to hardship for indigenous communities. He claimed that past political approaches had contributed to demographic challenges, adding that indigenous people were bearing the consequences.
The Deputy Speaker further said that illegal infiltration from Bangladesh is not restricted to the Northeast region. “This problem is not only in Assam or the Northeast. It exists in West Bengal, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan,” he said, stressing that the issue has national ramifications.
Calling for stronger verification mechanisms, Momin said the ongoing SIR exercise should be expanded across the country to systematically detect and deport illegal infiltrators. According to him, a uniform and comprehensive implementation would help address what he described as a growing demographic and security concern.
