ISBT recommissioned in Manipur after years, governor flags off bus services on 12 routes
After remaining non-functional for a prolonged period, the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) in Manipur was recommissioned on January 22, marking a significant step towards reviving public transport infrastructure in the state.
The recommissioning ceremony was held at the ISBT Complex, Khuman Lampak, in the presence of Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, who attended the programme as the chief guest.
As part of the event, the Governor flagged off regular bus services on 12 different routes, formally resuming both inter-district and intra-state connectivity. The reopening of the ISBT is expected to provide relief to commuters and strengthen transport linkages across Manipur after years of disruption.
During the programme, Governor Bhalla also virtually inaugurated District Transport Offices in four districts—Jiribam, Noney, Kakching and Pherzawl—underscoring the government’s focus on decentralising transport services and improving administrative reach in remote areas.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor said the recommissioning of the ISBT would not only ease public transportation but also contribute to the development of trade and the overall economy of the state. Recalling the history of the facility, he noted that the ISBT was originally inaugurated in 2011 with the objective of facilitating smooth passenger movement, but had stopped functioning due to various reasons.
He said the reopening of the ISBT reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening public transport infrastructure and improving connectivity. Emphasising its wider impact, Governor Bhalla stated that the recommissioned ISBT would help streamline traffic movement, reduce congestion in the city, and enhance connectivity both within Manipur and with neighbouring states. He also urged the concerned government departments to take necessary initiatives to ensure the efficient and sustainable operation of the facility.
With the recommissioning now complete, bus services have resumed on several key routes from Imphal, including those connecting Noney, Tamenglong, Ukhrul, Kamjong, Wabagai, Sugnu, Yaingangpokpi, Chandel, Leishangthem, Moirang, Kakching and Yairipok. The resumption of these services is expected to significantly improve mobility for residents and support economic and social activities across the state.
