Pranab Jyoti Chetia, General Secretary of Jatiya Dal Assam and noted human rights activist, has been detained by Hatigaon Police in connection with a controversial social media post allegedly linked to the proscribed militant outfit ULFA (I).
According to official sources, Chetia was picked up late last night from his rented residence in Basisthapur Bylane 1 by the Officer-in-Charge of Hatigaon Police Station. The arrest has been registered under Crime Branch Police Case No. 02/2025.
He has been remanded to police custody for further interrogation, and will be produced before the court later today. Authorities are yet to release full details regarding the legal sections or charges invoked in the case.
Confirming the development, Deputy Commissioner of Police Mrinal Deka stated that the investigation is ongoing and further questioning will be conducted following the court proceedings.
As of now, no official statement has been issued regarding the contents of the post or its specific connection to the banned outfit.
