Kirpan row at Zudio Store in Imphal sparks debate; Sikh youths speak out in Assam's Sivasagar

A controversy erupted after two Sikh youths alleged that they were stopped from entering a Zudio clothing store in Imphal, Manipur, for carrying kirpans, which is an article of faith traditionally worn by followers of Sikhism.

According to reports, the incident took place at a Zudio outlet in Imphal, where the store management reportedly objected to the youths entering the premises with their kirpans. The two youths recorded the entire incident on their mobile phones and later uploaded the video on social media, where it quickly went viral.

Following the circulation of the video, the youths, identified as Yadvinder Singh and Prabhjot Singh came into the spotlight. They alleged that the store’s action amounted to an attempt to curtail their constitutional rights, as carrying a kirpan is a protected religious practice under Indian law.

Speaking to the media after arriving at a Gurudwara in Sivasagar, the two youths narrated the sequence of events. They clarified that their objection was specifically to the store’s rule and not directed at any individual. They added that during their stay in Manipur, they had several positive experiences and visited multiple places without facing any issues.

The youths also stated that they were on a Sikh religious journey when the incident occurred. Citing the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, they emphasised the message of harmony and mutual understanding, saying their intention was not confrontation but dialogue.

They further mentioned that they did not face any restriction in entering other shops in Manipur while carrying their kirpans.

The incident has since triggered discussions on social media regarding religious rights and institutional regulations.
