Kokrajhar erupts as Hindu bengalis denounce state govt decision on ‘D Voter’ cases

The All Assam Bengali Youth Students’ Federation staged strong protests in Fakiragram and Dalowabari of Kokrajhar district, demanding the withdrawal of ‘D Voter’ cases registered against Hindu Bengalis.

Hundreds of local residents joined the demonstrations, voicing anger at what they described as discrimination against their community.

The protests were organised by the Fakiragram and Dalowabari regional units of the All BTR Bengali Youth Students’ Federation. Demonstrators carried placards and raised slogans such as “Withdraw D Voter cases against Hindu Bengalis,” “Down with the BJP government,” and “Himanta Biswa Sarma, beware.”

The controversy stems from a state government order issued on July 22, which announced the withdrawal of cases pending before Foreigners’ Tribunals against non-Muslim communities such as Bengalis, Koch-Rajbongshis, and Gorkhas. However, a subsequent revision to the order excluded Hindu Bengalis from the relief, stating that the ‘D Voter’ tag on their names would remain.

This move has triggered widespread resentment, with the federation accusing the government of deliberate bias. Vice President of the Federation Gopal Ghosh, along with Kokrajhar district president Samar Das, Pranesh Sarkar, and several regional leaders, led the protests in both Fakiragram’s Rabhapara and Dalowabari.

The agitators warned that unless the government reverses its decision and withdraws all ‘D Voter’ cases against Hindu Bengalis, the movement will intensify across Assam.
