Land pattas for Tirap tribal belt soon, announces Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

In a major boost for tribal communities in Assam’s Tinsukia district, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today announced that land pattas under the Protected Category will soon be granted to residents of the Tirap Tribal Belt and Block, particularly those living in Jagun and Lekhapani areas under the 83rd Margherita Legislative Constituency.

Addressing a presser, the Chief Minister said that various ethnic and tribal groups residing in the Tirap Mouza—including the Tai Ahom, Moran, Muttock, Chutia, Koch Rajbongshi, and Gorkha communities—will finally be recognised with land rights, correcting a long-standing issue affecting indigenous families living in the region for generations.

The announcement marks a milestone in the efforts led by Margherita MLA Bhaskar Sharma, who has consistently advocated for resolving the land patta issue since taking office in 2016.

Responding to the Chief Minister’s announcement, MLA Sharma expressed deep gratitude and welcomed the decision as a moment of long-awaited justice for tribal communities.

“This is a historic day for the people of the Tirap Tribal Belt. I thank Hon’ble Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma for fulfilling this long-pending demand,” said Sharma while speaking to the media.

The move is expected to bring both legal recognition and a sense of security to thousands of tribal families, strengthening their rights and ensuring protection under the state’s land laws.
