Magisterial inquiry ordered into death of Bir Lachit Sena leader Manas Jyoti Chetia

The Assam government has ordered a magisterial-level inquiry into the mysterious death of Bir Lachit Sena leader Manas Jyoti Chetia, amid allegations by the organisation that he was attacked and growing tension in Sivasagar.

Chetia was found critically injured beside a road in the Birubor area on August 23. He was rushed to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

According to reports, the post-mortem examination found multiple injuries, including severe injuries to the back of his head. The circumstances leading to his death are being investigated.

The Bir Lachit Sena has named 10 people in connection with the incident and alleged that Bangladeshi Muslims were behind the crime. The allegations have not been independently verified.

The development has triggered tension in Sivasagar, with Bir Lachit Sena leader Shrinkhal Chaliha accusing the police of failing to take action against those named in the FIR. He alleged that instead of acting against them, the police were providing them protection.

Chaliha has demanded immediate action against those responsible and warned that the organisation would launch a major protest if the alleged accused were not brought to book.

He also alleged that several suspicious persons had entered the Bihubar area, taking advantage of the flood situation, and urged the administration to investigate the matter.

The government-ordered magisterial inquiry is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding Chetia’s death, including the injuries he sustained and the events leading up to his being found beside the road.
