Mahout killed in elephant attack in Assam’s Dergaon; elephant had earlier killed owner
A mahout was killed after being attacked by a domesticated elephant in Assam’s Dergaon area on May 28, triggering panic among locals.
According to reports, the incident took place at Molai Kumar Gaon when an elephant named Ramprasad was being brought along a village road. Near a Shiva temple on the roadside, another elephant was already feeding on bamboo leaves.
As the two elephants came face-to-face on the same route, the mahout of the second elephant, identified as Prashanta, reportedly got down from the elephant. Before handlers could react, Ramprasad suddenly attacked Prashanta, killing him on the spot.
After the attack, the elephant moved away from the area. Its handler later managed to control and tie the elephant inside a forested area near Bengalgaon village.
Personnel from Dergaon Police and the Forest Department reached the spot and launched an inquiry into the incident.
Locals said the same elephant, Ramprasad, had allegedly attacked and killed its owner about a year ago.
