Main accused in Assam's Sivasagar diesel fraud case arrested by police
Sivasagar Police have arrested the main accused involved in a diesel fraud and theft case that came to light earlier this month, officials said on June 7.
The case surfaced on June 2 when police conducted a raid near Station Chariali on AT Road in Sivasagar town. Acting on a tip-off, a team led by Additional Superintendent of Police Maidul Islam searched two abandoned warehouses and recovered more than 30 drums filled with diesel.
During the operation, police seized the diesel-filled drums and detained two individuals for questioning.
According to police, the main accused, identified as Subhash Das, had allegedly purchased diesel worth around Rs 1.8 lakh from a petrol depot owned by Nemchand and Manikchand at Station Chariali and fled without making payment.
Based on a complaint lodged by the depot owner, police launched an investigation and subsequently uncovered the stockpile of diesel during the raid.
Police had earlier arrested Mustak Khan and Ishfaq Ahmed in connection with the case and sent them to judicial custody. However, the prime accused, Subhash Das, had been absconding.
Following sustained efforts, Sivasagar Police arrested Subhash Das from Sivasagar town on June 7.
Police said the investigation is continuing to determine whether more individuals are involved in the diesel theft and fraud racket. Further arrests are not being ruled out.
