Major landslide partially blocks Teesta, Chyakoong rivers in North Sikkim

A major landslide along the Naga–Tosa Road in the Naga Forest area of North Sikkim partially blocked the Teesta and Chyakoong rivers during the intervening night of September 5 and 6, 2026, prompting the district administration to step up monitoring along the river belt.
According to the District Administrative Centre, Mangan, information about the landslide was received from the District Police and Chungthang Sub-Division Police. A substantial portion of the hillside along the new road cutting of the Naga–Tosa Road, opposite the Theng Tunnel and near the confluence of the Teesta and Chyakoong rivers, reportedly collapsed.
The landslide resulted in the partial blockage of the flow of both rivers, with the Teesta River temporarily obstructed following the incident. At present, the flow of the Teesta has returned to normal, while water has accumulated in both the Teesta and Chyakoong rivers. Both rivers, however, continue to flow partially through the affected stretch.
No loss of life or injuries have been reported so far. The district administration is currently assessing the extent of damage to property, if any.
The SHO, Chungthang CP/PS, and personnel stationed at Theng CP are continuously monitoring the situation on the ground. Authorities have also been keeping a close watch on water levels at Sankalang OP and Phidang OP, where the levels are currently reported to be normal, although the water remains muddy.
Both locations have been directed to maintain continuous monitoring of river water levels and immediately report any significant changes to the authorities.
The Police Control Room has also been informed and directed to alert vulnerable areas in the lower belt as a precautionary measure, particularly in view of the water accumulation caused by the landslide.
The District Administration, Mangan, is continuing to monitor the landslide site as well as the Teesta river belt. Further updates will be issued following a detailed assessment of the situation at the site.
