Mamata Banerjee is opposing SIR without any reason: Himanta Biswa Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday, April 18, criticised West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for opposing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, stating that the process is necessary to ensure the integrity of voter lists.

Addressing the media in Kalimpong, Sarma said that the opposition to SIR was unwarranted and asserted that the exercise aims to include genuine Indian citizens while identifying and removing ineligible entries.

He alleged that the revision process would help eliminate the names of illegal immigrants, specifically referring to Bangladeshi nationals, from electoral rolls.

Sarma also commented on the failure of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill to pass in the Lok Sabha, targeting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other opposition members.

He alleged that remarks made by opposition leaders during the debate were disrespectful towards women and said the incident had triggered widespread resentment among women voters.

The Assam Chief Minister claimed that the opposition’s conduct in Parliament could have political consequences, asserting that public anger, particularly among women, may adversely affect the Congress party in future elections.
