Man arrested for allegedly attempting to abduct minor girl in Assam's Sribhumi
A man has been arrested for allegedly attempting to abduct and outrage the modesty of a Class 10 student in the Mokamsara Tea Estate area under Ratabari Police Station in Assam's Sribhumi district.
According to local sources, the minor was on her way to tuition with a friend when the accused, identified as Sanjiv Chauhan, allegedly tried to forcefully take her away along a secluded road. He is also accused of attempting to outrage the girl's modesty during the incident.
Hearing the cries of the two girls, local residents rushed to the spot, prompting the accused to flee. However, he was chased and apprehended by residents near the Dullavchhara Station Road area before being handed over to the Ratabari Police.
Based on a written complaint filed by the victim's family, police registered a case and arrested the accused. He was later produced before a court, while further investigation into the incident is underway.
Meanwhile, local residents have submitted a separate memorandum to the Ratabari Police alleging that various anti-social activities had been taking place at the accused's residence for a long time. They have demanded strict legal action against the accused and stronger measures to ensure the safety of women and children in the area.
The incident comes amid growing public concern over a series of crimes involving women and children reported in Sribhumi district in recent weeks, raising fresh questions over law and order and the safety of vulnerable groups in the region.
