The Manas National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has officially reopened its gates to visitors, marking a fresh season of eco-tourism in Assam. The reopening was celebrated with an awareness march, which resonated with the devotional chants of Harinaam, symbolizing harmony between nature and culture.
The park’s main entrance was inaugurated by Suman Mahapatra, Central Divisional Head of the BTR Forest Department, who also led a solemn observance of one minute of silence in memory of Assam’s beloved singer Zubeen Garg, who passed away recently.
Addressing the media, Mahapatra appealed to visitors to exercise responsibility and restraint while exploring the sanctuary.
“After months of closure, the wildlife has enjoyed a much-needed period of rest. Tourists must now ensure that their activities do not disrupt this fragile balance,” he said.
Mahapatra further highlighted several new initiatives planned for the park, including measures to curb encroachment and sustained awareness campaigns. He emphasized that unregulated human intrusion endangers wildlife and called for collective responsibility in conserving the biodiversity of Manas.
Paying tribute to the late music icon, Mahapatra expressed grief and underlined the emotional loss felt by the people of Assam.
“We are all deeply saddened. Everyone loves Zubeen’s songs, and we are discussing ways to preserve his memory in meaningful ways,” he noted.
