Margherita Muslims abstain from cow sacrifice during Eid-ul-Azha, reinforce communal harmony in Assam

In a remarkable gesture promoting communal harmony, brotherhood, and social unity, the Muslim community of Margherita in Assam’s Tinsukia district has decided to abstain from cow sacrifice during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha celebrations on May 28.

The decision was announced by the Margherita Central Muslim Committee during a press conference attended by community leaders, social workers, youth representatives, and members of mosque management committees.

According to the committee, the decision was taken in full compliance with the policies and regulations of the Assam government and the directions issued by the Margherita Co-District Administration.

Sources said an important meeting was held on May 20 between the district administration and local Muslim leaders, during which the committee assured full cooperation in maintaining peace, law and order, and communal harmony during the Eid celebrations.

Addressing the media, committee leaders stated that Eid-ul-Azha is fundamentally a festival symbolising sacrifice, devotion, and purity of heart, and that religious celebrations should never hurt the sentiments of others or disturb social peace.

“The spirit of brotherhood and harmony that has existed among communities in Assam for generations is above everything else. Along with religious practices, fulfilling social responsibility is also an important part of our faith,” the leaders said.

The committee appealed to all mosque committees and members of the Muslim community across the Margherita sub-division to strictly follow the administration’s guidelines and support the historic initiative.

The press conference was led by several prominent personalities, including Maulana Rustam Ul Qadri, Ujer Alam Khan, Alfaz Ahmed, social worker Taufique Khan, and Moinul Haque Talukdar.

The move has received widespread appreciation from various sections of society, with many describing it as a powerful example of social responsibility, patriotism, and communal harmony.

Citizens and local organisations expressed hope that the decision would further strengthen the bond of unity among communities in Assam and serve as a model for peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.
