Massive fire guts over 17 shops at Nawaibeel Bazar in West Karbi Anglong

A devastating fire broke out late last night, February 3, at Nawaibeel Bazar in Assam’s West Karbi Anglong district, completely gutting more than 17 shops and other commercial establishments, causing heavy financial losses to local traders and shopkeepers.

The affected market area falls under the jurisdiction of Kheroni Police Station. Police and fire services rushed to the spot after the blaze was reported and managed to bring the fire under control, preventing it from spreading further. No casualties were reported in the incident.

A preliminary inquiry has been initiated, and a detailed assessment of the damage is currently being carried out jointly by the district administration and law enforcement agencies. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained and remains under investigation.

In response to the incident, the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) has directed the district administration to take immediate and comprehensive steps to provide relief and rehabilitation to the affected shopkeepers. Officials said measures are being planned to assist victims financially and help restore their livelihoods.

Meanwhile, concern and anxiety have grown among local residents and the affected traders, with some demanding a thorough and impartial probe into the incident. Several shopkeepers have raised suspicions of possible foul play and have urged authorities to investigate all angles, including the possibility of a deliberate act or conspiracy.

The administration has appealed for calm and assured the affected families and business owners of full cooperation. Further details are expected to emerge as the damage assessment and investigation progress.
