Massive protests rock Hojai–Karbi Anglong border after specially-abled man killed in Kheroni violence

Protests broke out along the Hojai–Karbi Anglong border on Wednesday, December 24 following the death of a young man who was allegedly burnt alive during violence in Kheroni market area of West Karbi Anglong district on Tuesday. The incident triggered widespread protests and heightened security concerns in bordering regions.

The situation turned volatile in the Forest Bazaar area of Lanka as hundreds of local residents took to the streets, holding placards and raising slogans to demand justice for the deceased. Public anger intensified as news of the tragic death spread rapidly, leading to disruption of normal life in the area. Shops remained closed and vehicular movement was partially affected due to the agitation.

During the protest, demonstrators reportedly vandalised and pulled down the Ranaima Karbi Anglong Entry Tax Gate, further escalating tensions at the sensitive inter-district border.

The deceased has been identified as Suraj Dey, a specially-abled man, aged around 32. According to reports, he was trapped inside his shop when arson broke out amid clashes linked to ongoing demands for the eviction of non-tribal settlers from protected grazing reserves in West Karbi Anglong.

The incident occurred on Tuesday at Kheroni market, where several structures were allegedly set ablaze during unrest. The victim was reportedly unable to escape in time and was charred to death when his shop was torched.

On Wednesday, thousands of people from the Bengali-speaking community staged protests at Forest Bazaar, a bordering area between West Karbi Anglong and Hojai districts. Protesters demanded justice for the victim and sought assurances of safety and protection for residents amid the continuing unrest.

The protesters alleged that non-tribal establishments were selectively targeted during the agitation, an accusation that has further deepened community tensions.

In response to the deteriorating situation, security forces have been deployed in sensitive areas, and authorities have intensified monitoring to prevent further escalation. Senior police officials have urged restraint and appealed for calm from all sides.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Vivek Raj Singh visited the protest site, appealed to demonstrators to maintain peace, and assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted and strict action taken against those found responsible for the incident.

Authorities have reiterated that maintaining law and order remains a top priority, even as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death continue.
