Massive show of strength in Assam's Goalpara as 5000 from Garo community join BJP

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday, February 25, staged a massive show of strength in Goalpara, with more than 5,000 members of the Garo community formally joining the party at a large-scale induction programme. The event, held at the JN Memorial Higher Secondary School playground in Agia, is being seen as a significant consolidation move in the tribal belt of Lower Assam.

The joining programme was organised under the leadership of Riya Sangma, State Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Assam Pradesh ST Morcha. Party leaders described the event as one of the largest single-day inductions of Garo community members into the BJP in the region.

The programme witnessed the presence of Samir Oraon, National President of the BJP’s National Scheduled Tribes (ST) Morcha, who formally welcomed the new entrants into the party fold. Senior party functionaries and local leaders were also present in large numbers, underscoring the political importance of the event.

According to party sources, the new members came from various areas under the West Goalpara Legislative Assembly Constituency, expressing support for what they described as the BJP’s developmental agenda and tribal welfare initiatives. Leaders at the event highlighted the Centre’s and Assam government’s focus on infrastructure development, welfare schemes, and empowerment of Scheduled Tribes as key factors behind the large-scale induction.

Political observers believe the development could have far-reaching implications in Lower Assam, particularly in constituencies with significant tribal populations. The induction is also being viewed as part of the BJP’s broader strategy to deepen its organisational base among indigenous communities and strengthen its foothold in regions traditionally influenced by regional and opposition parties.
