Missa Juri erosion threatens Bamuni villages in Assam's Kaliabor, hundreds of bighas of paddy fields inundated

Floodwaters of the Missa Juri have triggered severe erosion in the greater Bamuni area of Kaliabor, leaving residents of Bhatabari village worried as several families have lost parts of their ancestral land to the swelling watercourse.

The rising waters of the Missa Juri have intensified erosion along the stretch passing through Bhatabari, with villagers claiming that substantial portions of ancestral property have already been washed away.

Concerned over the worsening situation, local residents have sought the intervention of Kaliabor MLA and Assam Cabinet Minister Keshab Mahanta. They have urged the minister to take immediate measures, including the installation of geo-bags, to protect the vulnerable stretches and prevent further erosion.

Meanwhile, floodwaters from the Misa river have submerged the road connecting Barali village with Nijari and Bamuni via Balibat, branching off from the four-lane National Highway.

Hundreds of bighas of transplanted sali paddy fields on both sides of the road have been inundated, while several industrial units in the area have also been affected.

The rising water has damaged the road at several locations, while water up to knee level is reportedly flowing over portions of the route. The condition has made commuting along the road risky, forcing residents to travel through the inundated stretch despite the danger.

Local residents have urged the authorities to reconstruct and raise the road to a higher level once the floodwaters recede, in order to prevent the route from being repeatedly inundated during the monsoon.
