More AASU protests will mean more evictions: Assam CM

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday, August 11 addressed an election rally at Kajalgaon in Chirang as part of the BJP’s Vijay Sankalp Sabha, using the platform to strongly counter opposition leaders’ recent comments.

Responding to Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi’s accusation of the BJP being “vote thieves,” Sarma said such remarks would not resonate well with the public. “We have provided Orunodoi benefits to 40 lakh women, created employment for 2 lakh youths, and distributed bicycles to 4 lakh girl students. People expect serious campaigning, and constant abuse during election time does not go down well with them,” he remarked.

The Chief Minister also took aim at Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi, challenging him to specify the number of ‘Miya’ Muslims in his constituency. “He is targeting a particular community. If he has the courage, let him say it openly,” Sarma asserted.

On the All Assam Students’ Union’s (AASU) ongoing protests, Sarma issued a stern warning: “The more they protest, the more eviction drives will be carried out.”

Touching upon the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), Sarma said the matter was sub judice. “AASU has already filed a case in the Supreme Court regarding CAA. As the matter is under judicial consideration, the Chief Minister cannot intervene,” he stated.
