Mouldy sweets sold at Moran hotel in Assam; Food Safety Department launches probe

The Food Safety Department has launched an inspection at a hotel in Moran after complaints that mouldy sweets were being sold to customers, raising concerns over food safety and public health.

The inspection was conducted at ‘Tasty Treat’, located near the Moran bus stand, following a complaint by the Moran unit of the All Assam Students’ Union.

The matter came to light after a man purchased Bundia laddus from the establishment and took them home. He and his pregnant sister reportedly consumed the sweets before discovering that they had developed mould and had spoiled.

The matter was subsequently brought to the notice of the Students’ Union, following which its representatives alerted the authorities.

A Food Safety Officer, accompanied by Moran Police and Students’ Union representatives, visited the establishment and conducted an inspection.

During the inspection, officials reportedly found mould on several milk- and chhana-based sweets. The refrigeration unit used to store the sweets was also found to be non-functional.

Officials further found that the establishment did not possess a valid FSSAI licence.

The Food Safety Department destroyed the spoiled sweets and initiated the process of registering a case against the establishment.

The incident has raised concerns among local residents, who have called for regular inspections of food establishments in Moran to ensure compliance with food safety standards and prevent the sale of spoiled food.
