Muslim women back UCC, urge Assam CM to strictly enforce anti-polygamy law

A group of Muslim women in Assam's Nagaon district has openly expressed support for the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and urged Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to strictly enforce the state's anti-polygamy law.

The women, describing themselves as victims of polygamy, submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the Nagaon Deputy Commissioner on Monday, demanding stringent action against those violating the law.

Among their key demands, they called for the immediate dismissal and arrest of government employees found practising polygamy, alleging that strict enforcement of the law is essential to protect the rights and dignity of Muslim women.

The memorandum also expressed support for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code, with the women asserting that such reforms would help ensure justice, equality and legal protection for women.

The move comes amid the Assam government's ongoing efforts to implement the Uniform Civil Code and strengthen measures against polygamy in the state. The state government has maintained that the proposed legal reforms are aimed at ensuring gender justice and protecting women's rights.
