Muslims stage protest against proposed UCC Bill after Friday prayers in Silchar
Members of the Muslim community staged a peaceful protest against the Assam government's proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill after Friday prayers (July 3) in the Berenga area of Silchar.
The demonstration was organised by various religious and social organisations, with local worshippers gathering outside a mosque to voice their opposition to the proposed legislation. Protesters were seen carrying petitions demanding the withdrawal of the Bill.
The demonstrators contended that the proposed UCC Bill is contrary to Muslim Personal Law and infringes upon the constitutional guarantees of religious freedom and fundamental rights. They urged the government to withdraw the proposed legislation.
Addressing the gathering, speakers said the implementation of the UCC would adversely affect the Muslim community's personal laws and religious practices. They asserted that they would continue to oppose the proposal through peaceful and democratic means.
The organisers also appealed to the government to reconsider and withdraw the proposed Bill. The protest concluded peacefully, and no untoward incidents were reported. Law and order remained normal in the area.
