Nagaon bypoll: BJP’s Debashish Sharma defeats Badruddin Ajmal by over 1.40 lakh votes
BJP candidate Debashish Sharma won the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll by a margin of 1,41,916 votes, defeating AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal in a contest that triggered celebrations among BJP workers and supporters across the constituency.
Sharma secured 7,13,622 votes, while Ajmal received 5,70,413 votes. Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora finished third with 1,28,743 votes.
As the results were announced, a celebratory atmosphere swept through Nagaon town and several other parts of the district, with BJP workers taking to the streets to celebrate the party's victory.
Hundreds of party workers gathered outside the BJP office, waving saffron flags and raising slogans such as “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “BJP Zindabad”. Supporters smeared each other with coloured powder, burst firecrackers and celebrated to the sound of traditional drums.
A victory procession was also taken out through the streets of Nagaon, with party workers joined by local supporters.
Local BJP leaders attributed the victory to the hard work of party workers and public support, claiming that voters had backed the party's development agenda and its promise of stability.
The result marks a significant electoral setback for the Congress in the constituency, while the BJP has projected Sharma's victory as a sign of support for its development policies.
