‘Nagaon is not traditionally BJP’s’: Himanta on Lok Sabha bypoll

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on September 7 said Nagaon is not traditionally a BJP stronghold, noting that the party had lost the Lok Sabha constituency by around 2.5 lakh votes in the previous election and would approach the upcoming bypoll by focusing on improving its performance across the Assembly segments.

Sarma said the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency has a sizeable minority population and is politically divided between areas where the BJP and Congress and its allies have traditionally performed strongly.

“From the BJP's point of view, in the Assembly election, BJP won Jagiroad, Morigaon and Raha. BJP should win again in these three constituencies. In the remaining four seats, we will try to improve,” Sarma said.

The chief minister said the BJP would contest the Lok Sabha bypoll with this strategy, while cautioning against making predictions about victory or defeat.

“We will not speak about win or loss as we have lost the last Lok Sabha polls with 2.5 lakh votes,” he said.

Sarma also said he would not attend the BJP joining ceremony of Debashish Sharma, without elaborating on the reason.

The Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency comprises the Assembly segments of Jagiroad, Morigaon, Raha, Samaguri, Dhing, Lahorighat and Rupahihat. The BJP won Jagiroad, Morigaon and Raha in the 2026 Assembly election, while Congress and its allies secured the remaining four seats.
