A severe hailstorm accompanied by a torrent of water from the hills has breached the crucial connectivity between Nagaon and Karbi Anglong, putting hundreds of lives at risk. In an attempt to maintain access, residents of Karbi Anglong have resorted to constructing a makeshift bridge using betel nut trees.
The people of Karbi Anglong are suffering immensely under the guise of development, as the true extent of the district's infrastructural shortcomings is exposed. The Dongpong Juri road, located within the Socheng Dhenta council, has been severely damaged by water descending from the hills, washing away the critical route that leads to the area.
This precarious situation is further exacerbated by a stream flowing through the Nagaon-Karbi Anglong region of the Kaliabor sub-division. A bridge over this stream, constructed in 2004, has become a symbol of the ongoing issues. Due to flaws in the bridge's construction, residents of both districts are facing severe challenges.
The dilapidated road conditions are particularly troublesome for students, laborers, and other commuters. Three schools in Dongpong Juri, each housing thousands of students, are significantly impacted. Approximately 70% of these students hail from the Kaliabor sub-division in Nagaon district, and they, along with their teachers, are struggling to navigate the dangerous and deteriorated route.
This situation has drawn attention to the long-standing infrastructural deficiencies in the region, as residents call for urgent intervention to restore proper connectivity and ensure the safety of the population. The incident underscores the broader issues of neglected development in the hill district, where promises of progress have yet to translate into tangible benefits for the local population.
