Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll: 1,339 polling stations set up for 19.07 lakh voters

The Nagaon district administration has begun preparations for the upcoming Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election after the Election Commission of India announced the poll schedule on September 7.

Nagaon Deputy Commissioner and Election Returning Officer Aranyak Saikia, who assumed charge on Monday, addressed a press conference later in the day and said the Model Code of Conduct has come into force with immediate effect in the district.

As per the schedule, the last date for filing nominations is September 16, while scrutiny of nomination papers will be held on September 17. Candidates can withdraw their nominations till September 19.

Polling for the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency will be held on October 6, with counting of votes scheduled for October 9.

Saikia said a total of 19,07,209 voters are eligible to exercise their franchise in the constituency, which comprises eight Assembly segments — five in Nagaon district and three in Morigaon district.

The five Assembly constituencies in Nagaon district are Dhing, Rupohihat, Samaguri, Raha and Nagaon-Batadroba, while Laharighat, Jagiroad and Morigaon fall under Morigaon district.

A total of 1,339 polling stations have been set up across the Lok Sabha constituency.

For the five Assembly segments in Nagaon district, election materials will be distributed and strong rooms will be set up at Nagaon Government Higher Secondary Boys' School and Dawson Higher Secondary Multi-purpose School in Nagaon town. Counting of votes will also be conducted at these two locations, Saikia said.

The district administration has also set up a control room and launched toll-free helplines to facilitate the smooth conduct of the election. Voters and the public can contact the administration at 03672-238000 or 1077.

Saikia appealed to the people of Nagaon to extend their cooperation to the administration for the peaceful and smooth conduct of the by-election.
