Nagaon woman alleges husband contracted second marriage despite first wife, child

Allegations of a second marriage in violation of Assam's Uniform Civil Code (UCC) have surfaced from Nagaon's Batadrava, with a woman accusing her husband of marrying another woman despite being legally married and having a child.

According to the complaint, Nur Alam Hussain alias Ratul, a resident of Bherbheri village, allegedly married another woman with the help of Sahab Uddin and his wife Ranjana Khatun of Dhupguri Kachari village. The complainant alleged that Ratul had been living with his second wife at Sahab Uddin's residence.

The first wife, Shabnam Sultana, claimed that when she reached the house after learning about the alleged marriage, she was assaulted by Ratul, Sahab Uddin and Ranjana Khatun before they fled the spot.

Shabnam has lodged an FIR at the Dhing Police Station against the three accused, seeking legal action.

She has also levelled allegations that Ratul had previously been jailed in connection with drug trafficking, and further claimed that Sahab Uddin is also involved in the illegal drug trade. These allegations are yet to be independently verified by the police.

Appealing to the state government through the media, Shabnam demanded strict action against those allegedly violating the UCC as well as those allegedly involved in drug trafficking. She also sought confiscation of their properties and justice for herself.

Police have not yet issued an official statement on the allegations. Further investigation is underway.
