A passenger boat carrying over a hundred people met with an accident in the Brahmaputra River near Chalabandha Char in Dhubri district on March 20. The boat, overloaded with cargo, began to sink before reaching its destination, triggering panic among passengers.
The engine-powered vessel had departed from the Dhubri ghat en route to Chalabandha Char when it started sinking mid-river due to excessive weight. Chaos ensued as passengers screamed for help, fearing for their lives.
In a swift response, the boatman maneuvered the sinking vessel towards a nearby river island, allowing passengers to disembark safely. This quick action ensured that all passengers narrowly escaped a potential disaster.
Meanwhile, local residents made desperate attempts to save the boat, which was sinking along with a significant amount of cargo. Despite their efforts, the vessel could not be salvaged.
Authorities have been alerted, and further investigations are expected to assess safety measures and prevent such incidents in the future.
