NEEPCO Opens Khandong dam gates, issues flood alert for Kapili river basin
The North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) has issued a special advisory after opening the gates of the Khandong Hydroelectric Project dam at Umrangso in Assam's Dima Hasao district following a sharp rise in reservoir water levels caused by continuous rainfall in the region.
According to the advisory, persistent rains in Dima Hasao and neighbouring Meghalaya have significantly increased the water level in the dam, prompting authorities to release water from the reservoir as a precautionary measure.
In view of the situation, NEEPCO has formally alerted district administrations, disaster management authorities and emergency response agencies in areas located along the Kapili river basin.
The corporation has urged the concerned authorities to take all necessary precautionary measures and ensure that residents living in low-lying areas and settlements along the Kapili River remain vigilant.
Officials warned that the release of water could lead to a rise in the river's water level downstream and advised people residing near the riverbanks to avoid venturing into the river or its adjoining areas until conditions improve.
The district administrations are expected to closely monitor the situation and issue local advisories wherever necessary to prevent any untoward incidents.
Authorities have appealed to the public to cooperate with safety measures and follow official instructions as heavy rainfall continues across parts of Assam and Meghalaya.
