Night-time attack in Assam's Bongaigaon: 11 Jamaat members assaulted on highway, seniors injured
Eleven members of the Tablighi Jamaat were assaulted late on the night of January 28, while travelling through the Old Bongaigaon locality in Bongaigaon district, Assam. The group, which included senior citizens, was returning to their homes in Barpeta’s Kalgachia area after a trip to Kolkata.
Panic spread among local residents following the incident, highlighting ongoing fears about the safety of commuters in the region. The attack has sent shockwaves through the community, with many expressing dismay over the brazenness of such violence on a public highway.
According to reports, the victims were travelling in two e-rickshaws when they were intercepted by unidentified individuals. The assailants allegedly took the keys from the drivers, directed communal slurs at the group, and physically attacked them. Senior citizens in the party were among those who suffered injuries during the assault. The suddenness and aggression of the attack left the victims traumatized, and some required immediate medical attention due to the severity of their injuries.
Upon being notified by eyewitnesses, a police team arrived at the scene of the attack. Officers rescued the injured Tablighi Jamaat members and arranged for their admission to Bongaigaon Civil Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment. The authorities have not released any statements regarding the progress of the investigation so far. However, local sources indicate that the police have increased patrolling in the area following the incident, in an attempt to reassure the public and prevent further attacks.
Local residents and those involved in the incident have voiced concern about similar occurrences becoming common in recent times. "Locals and victims alleged that harassment in the name of vehicle checking has become frequent in the district." Many believe that such acts are not isolated, but part of a worrying trend that has made people increasingly wary of travelling at night.
Victims and eyewitnesses further stated that such harassment often includes questioning travellers about their community and religion, which they say contributes to an atmosphere of unease. "They claimed that people are often questioned about their community and religion, creating an atmosphere of fear." This has led to heightened anxiety among residents, particularly those belonging to minority communities, who feel especially vulnerable during late-night journeys.
Fear of late-night travel on certain stretches of highway is also growing. "Residents said many avoid travelling on the Shahid Bedi–Salmara stretch after 9 pm due to safety concerns." Community members report feeling increasingly unsafe while commuting after dark. Some families have even altered their routines, opting to travel during daylight hours to minimize risk, and have urged authorities to take stronger measures to ensure public safety.
The incident has sparked discussions about the adequacy of law enforcement and the general state of law and order in Bongaigaon district. Many have pointed to the need for increased police patrolling and stricter action to deter similar incidents in future. Civic groups and local leaders have called for swift justice and more robust security protocols to restore confidence among the public.
Concerns remain particularly strong regarding the safety of individuals from minority communities and those engaged in religious travel. The attack has highlighted long-standing anxieties about communal targeting and road safety in the area, especially at night. The community continues to demand accountability and assurances that such incidents will not be repeated, emphasising the importance of upholding the rights and safety of all citizens.
