NIT Silchar lights over 1 lakh diyas honouring Zubeen Garg and martyrs of Operation Sindoor
As the rest of India celebrated the festival of lights, Silchar in Assam’s Barak Valley witnessed a spectacular and emotional Diwali celebration this year. The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar made history by lighting 1,11,111 earthen lamps, a glowing tribute to late music legend Zubeen Garg and a heartfelt remembrance of the martyrs of Operation Sindoor.
The institute’s sprawling football ground turned into a mesmerizing sea of light as students, faculty, and staff meticulously arranged the diyas to form a giant image of Lord Ram, symbolizing the victory of light over darkness and unity over division.
The event, organized jointly by the NIT authorities, students, and staff, drew people from all walks of life, transcending religion, caste, and creed, in a shared spirit of harmony and patriotism.
Speaking about the initiative, NIT Silchar Director, Prof. Dilip Kumar Vaidya, said,
“Every year, NIT celebrates Diwali in a different way to convey a special message. This year, the festival holds deeper meaning, on one hand, we remember Zubeen da, whose music continues to inspire millions; on the other, we pay homage to the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives in Operation Sindoor. The image of Lord Ram formed with diyas stands as a message of unity, reminding us that only by standing together can we truly serve our nation and society.”
