Oil tanker overturns in Sivasagar’s Rudrasagar, fuel-laden vehicle falls into pond
A fuel-laden oil tanker overturned in Assam’s Sivasagar district on Wednesday evening, May 20, after the driver allegedly lost control while attempting to avoid an oncoming bus.
The accident took place around 8 pm at Rudrasagar area of the district.
According to preliminary information, the tanker, bearing registration number AS04 AC 4991, was transporting petrol and diesel from Numaligarh to an oil depot in Nazira.
The driver claimed that the vehicle went out of control while trying to give way to a bus coming from the opposite direction, causing the tanker to veer off the road and overturn into a deep pond beside the highway.
The tanker was carrying nearly 12,000 litres of fuel at the time of the accident.
Local residents rushed to the spot and rescued the driver and handyman from the vehicle.
Reports indicate that poor road conditions may have contributed to the accident, resulting in the heavy vehicle slipping off the road and plunging into the pond.
The pond reportedly belongs to a self-help group engaged in fish farming, raising concerns over possible environmental and economic impacts following the incident.
Further details are awaited.
