One killed, another critical in Assam tea estate attack; mob violence follows

Tension gripped Assam’s Doomdooma on Tuesday night (November 11) after a violent attack at the Rupai Tea Estate led to the death of one woman and left another critically injured.

The incident occurred when a local man, identified as Narottam Bhoomij, allegedly attacked Sheela Nanda and her daughter-in-law, Rashmi Karmakar, with a sharp weapon.

While Sheela succumbed to her injuries at the hospital, Rashmi remains in critical condition and is undergoing treatment in Dibrugarh.

Following the attack, enraged locals set several houses and shops on fire and vandalised an e-rickshaw, demanding that the accused be handed over to them before police take possession of the deceased’s body.

Police later arrested Bhoomij from the Baghjan area, but the situation at the tea estate remains tense.
