ONGC sees new avenues for gas exploration at Amraghat in Assam’s Cachar

The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) is stepping up exploration and development activities at Amraghat in Assam’s Cachar district following the discovery of gas at the site, ONGC Director (Investigation) Om Prakash Sinha said.

Sinha made the statement during a visit to the Amraghat Gas Extraction Plant under ONGC’s Cachar Forward Base, where he reviewed the progress of exploration work, the hydrocarbon potential of the area and technical aspects of the project.

“Gas has been found at Amraghat and work on the project is progressing rapidly,” Sinha told reporters. He said more than one lakh units of gas were being extracted daily from the plant.

He said ONGC’s geoscientists had assessed the potential of the area and that a pipeline would be essential for transporting the gas. Work related to the project was continuing round the clock, he said.

The Amraghat project has been under development for several years. Environmental clearance has been obtained for the exploration, development and production of oil and gas in the area.

Sinha said the Barak Valley had been associated with gas production for nearly five decades and that the Amraghat project could open up further avenues for exploration in the region.

He also highlighted the potential for local employment and investment associated with the project and said ONGC was working with people in the area.

Sinha said the company was also undertaking initiatives in the health and education sectors through its corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes.
