"Only caps and beards come to mind when we think of Goalpara": Assam minister Ashok Singhal

As part of the electoral push, ahead of Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council polls, Assam minister Ashok Singhal addressed a rally in Dariduri in Golaghat on March 26, lending support to NDA candidate Jonali Rabha. However, it his speech that has ignited a firestorm of controversy.

During his address, he remarked, ""When we think of Goalpara, only caps come to mind. Only beards come to mind".

Further, he alleged that "one community has destroyed Goalpara" and urged people to "unite and fight to win." He also took a direct jab at the opposition, declaring that "there is no point in voting for Congress anymore, as Congress has nothing left even to eat."

Adding to the controversy, Singhal was also confronted with questions regarding the recent arrest of journalist Dilawar Hussain Mazumdar. However, rather than providing a clear response, he evaded the topic. His refusal to address the issue has drawn criticism from journalists and opposition leaders, who argue that the freedom of the press is a critical issue that cannot be ignored in a democratic setup.

As the RHAC elections draw near, the political atmosphere in the region remains tense. Campaigns have become increasingly aggressive, with parties attempting to mobilize their voter base while navigating growing controversies.
